It is interesting how different people react in different ways in the face of a catastrophe such as a flood ... Wanda a child oblivious to the real dangers but cognisant of the worry around her ... Elsie and Carl knowing the dangers but taking a calculated risk that the waters wouldn't reach their upstairs apartment ... Paul playing it safe and moving his furniture after assessing the state of the river and the possible scenario to follow. Despite criticism that he was being too cautious, he backed himself and his instincts. It is good to read these memories and appreciate that I haven't (yet, at least!) had to face a catastrophe such as a flood.

Thanks, Jane, for your thoughtful observations. It makes me think of all the decisions people had to make under a lot of stress because no one was expecting another flood in Portsmouth. I’m glad you haven’t faced this situation and hope you never do.
